Accor to Open Mövenpick Resort on Gomaspan Lake in Erbil
Accor and KRD Holding have signed an agreement to develop Mövenpick Erbil Gomaspan Resort, a 150-key lakefront property scheduled to open in 2030 in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.
The new-build resort will be located on the shores of Gomaspan Lake in Erbil Governorate, less than 30 minutes from Erbil city centre. The project will represent Mövenpick’s first hotel in the Kurdistan Region and its second property in Iraq.
Designed as a leisure and events destination, the resort is expected to attract both domestic and international visitors seeking short getaways, while also targeting weddings, celebrations, corporate retreats and business events.
The development will feature 150 rooms and suites, alongside several restaurants and lounges, a spa, family leisure club and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Its lakefront location is expected to be a central element of the guest experience, offering views across the surrounding landscape.
Events will form a major component of the resort’s offering, with more than 1,300 square metres of meeting and event space planned for weddings, corporate functions and large-scale regional gatherings.
The property will also reflect Mövenpick’s focus on culinary experiences and social interaction, with its restaurants and shared spaces designed to encourage guests and families to spend time together. The resort is expected to cater to both short leisure breaks and longer stays, including multi-generational travel.
The signing is part of Accor’s broader expansion in Iraq. The hospitality group currently operates one hotel in the country, with more than 260 rooms, while a further five properties comprising approximately 1,300 rooms are in the development pipeline.
Mövenpick Erbil Gomaspan Resort will join Mövenpick Hotel Al Zaytoon Baghdad, strengthening the brand’s presence in Iraq and expanding its footprint into one of the country’s emerging leisure destinations.
With its lakefront setting and proximity to Erbil, the resort is positioned to add a new internationally branded hospitality option outside the city’s urban centre and support the development of Gomaspan Lake as a regional leisure and events destination.
